When COVID-19 caused states to shut down most physical stores, sales surged for many of the Next 1000 merchants that sell primarily online. The shutdowns also boosted online sales for store-based retailers, but typically not enough to make up for lost revenue from brick-and-mortar locations.
When the coronavirus moved a large portion of consumer spending to the web, many—but not all—small e-retailers benefitted.
