Alister Grant Auctioneers has been supplying luxury goods for more than 70 years, and January marked the launch of its online presence. We caught up with one of its owners, Michael Grant
Q: How and why was the company founded, back in the 1940s?
A: It all began in Antwerp. My father-in-law, who was originally from Romania, was forced to flee his home country during the Second World War, when he was just 11. They walked all the way to Israel on a journey that took about six months. When he was 20, he went off travelling – but his money ran out in Belgium. He took a job at a diamond bourse there and began, slowly, to buy and sell within the rough and polished diamond industry. My background was in the gold business, so when my wife and I married, I was introduced to the sorts of work my father-in-law did. We helped bring what he was doing to the UK.
